Summary, Analysis and Response: Popular Mechanics
In Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver, the writer represented a story about the scenes of contention for a baby
between a man and a woman. The story began in an evening of early spring with snow melting. When the man was packing up and ready to
leave, the woman pretended to be happy but cried for his indifference. The
woman took the photograph of the child despite the man's objection. The man
walked out of the room and began to fight for the ownership of their baby boy. The
child cried and almost fell to the ground. The author did not tell us
exactly how the story ended and left us with limitless imagination.
In the first paragraph, the
author describes it as a season of ice and snow, possibly representing two
different competing forces. As the story develops, the light becomes
darker and darker, which can signal the situation becoming worse and worse. In
the fifth paragraph,She cried and proved that she did not want the man to leave, but his
indifference made him very angry, so she could only pretend to be happy to
fight back the man's indifference. At first he was just tidying up his things,
but her excesses didn't even allow him to take pictures of his children, giving
him the idea of taking away children. Since he was not allowed to take the
pictures, he would take the kids. The author does not say exactly who made the
mistake and made him so indifference and make her so crazy, but indifference
and pressing hard step by step( She said she was glad to see him leave and took pictures of the
children touched his nerves step by step ) make the
contradiction to
upgrade. The baby is more like the spoils of their battles than their children.
In my opinion, the author uses only he and she in this article, rather than a
specific name because it is a microcosm of family fragmentation. A family
without love is always quarrelling with each other, but the one who is hurt is
always the child. Both want to have child, but only one side
let go first to end the argument to reduce the harm to the child, and always
the side let it go with a great love. I think this is also a victory.
When they wrangled, only she noticed
that the child was struggling, which shows how cold and indifferent the man
becomes after losing his mind with anger. If I were one of the couples, I would stop
quarrelling and fighting when I saw the child crying and even got hurt because
of our quarrels and fights, because child is the most important. As parents who really love their children, they can't bear to see
their children get hurt.
